Cat Neutering: When, How and What to Watch Afterwards

Cat Neutering: When, How and What to Watch Afterwards

The benefits of neutering female and male cats, the right age, the day of surgery and recovery.

Neutering is among the most important preventive procedures for cat health and for controlling the stray cat population. Neutered cats live longer; the risk of pyometra, mammary tumours, testicular and prostate disease and fight-borne infections falls markedly. Behaviourally, spraying (urine marking), roaming and loud calling decrease.

At what age?

  • In female cats, neutering before the first heat at 5–6 months reduces mammary tumour risk the most.
  • In male cats it is done at 5–7 months; if done before the spraying habit forms there are fewer behaviour problems.
  • Adult and senior cats can also be neutered; in that case pre-operative bloods and cardiac assessment matter more.

The day of surgery

  1. Food is withheld for 8–10 hours and water for 2 hours before surgery.
  2. On admission there is an examination and, if needed, a blood test; IV access is placed for anaesthesia monitoring.
  3. In females the ovaries and uterus (ovariohysterectomy) are removed, in males the testes (castration); male cat surgery takes 10–15 minutes.
  4. Discharge is the same evening; painkillers and wound care instructions are given in writing.

After returning home

  • Keep the cat in a quiet, warm room away from high places; slight drowsiness on the first night is normal.
  • Use a protective suit or collar for 10 days to prevent licking of the wound.
  • Give small amounts of food and water for the first 24 hours; call if vomiting continues.
  • If there is redness, swelling or discharge at the wound bring the cat for a check.

Our cat neutering fee starts at 3,200 TRY (male) and 4,200 TRY (female); tests, painkillers and the protective suit are included. We also support municipal free neutering campaigns for street cats.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does a neutered cat put on weight? The hormonal change can raise appetite; weight is controlled with measured feeding and play, and neutered-cat food is advised.
  • Is surgery done during heat? Yes, though bleeding risk rises slightly during heat; it is planned according to the vet's assessment.
  • Is the operation painful? The operation is done under anaesthesia; painkillers are given for 3–5 days afterwards.

In summary

Neutering done early protects the animal's health and prevents unwanted litters. Follow the fasting rule before surgery, protect the wound with a collar afterwards and do not skip the day-10 check.
